MOBILIZING a 13,000- STRONG KOREAN STUDENT NETWORK

PROBLEM

  • Even though there are over 100,000 Korean students studying in the U.S, there was no cohesive umbrella organization for the community, aside from small localized groups.

SOLUTION

  • MiYooMo, or the Korean Student Ambassadors for Innovative Volunteer Outreach was developed by myself with a goal to integrate the Korean student community at-large in the US was developed by myself with a goal to integrate the Korean student community at-large in the US.

  • Its primary identity is an online platform where members promote projects and exchange creative ideas in response to relevant issues.

  • Since 2008, MiYooMo has grown into a full-fledged leading non-profit online community, a venue for Korean students studying in various U.S. universities to discuss not only their identity as an ethnic group but also to exchange creative ideas regarding global affairs.

ACHIEVEMENTS

“INTERNET FOR PEACE” GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

  • The “Internet for Peace” campaign was one of the best examples in using the internet for social betterment. During the summer of 2010, for the first time in 44 years, North Korea participated in the World Cup, making international headlines. This kind of public acknowledgment of global cooperation, despite the political and social dissent, was very meaningful. In response to this event, MiYooMo started the “Internet for Peace” campaign. The campaign included the composition and performing of an original song, “Become One” which even spread to North Korea via RFA (Radio Free Asia, www.fra.org/english/) and VOA (Voice of America, www.voanews.com/english/news/). Despite the fact that these radio programs are illegal under the current government, many North Koreans were able to access the song.  The core idea behind the song was to plead with North Korea in making a more peaceful environment and thereby encourage the rest of the world to do the same.

  • After the success of the project, I was able to create a video titled “Internet: The Best Tool for Peace,” which won YouTube’s “Internet for Peace” video competition, sponsored by Wired Magazine. This video competition was in celebration of the Internet’s nomination for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. The video was featured during the World Peace Day event on September 21, 2010 at the Paley Center for Media in New York, and was even selected for the main page on Youtube. During this process, I was able to share my beliefs with individuals across the world, that the internet is truly the best tool to promote world peace.

SELECTION OF SOUTH KOREA’S JEJU ISLAND AS ONE OF NEW 7 WONDERS OF NATURE

  • In 2011, South Korea’s bid (Jeju Island) for the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” was of national importance, on par with the Olympic bid for hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics at PyeongChang. Miyoomo, whose members come from diverse backgrounds: music, the graphic arts, and marketing played a vital role in creating multimedia contents for the campaign.

2010 US CENSU: INNOVATIVE PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN

  • Miyoomo organized student supporters from over fifty U.S. colleges and corporations via Social Media to spread and inform the significance of Census participation among fellow Koreans at their home institutes.

**  I led Miyoomo from 2008 to 2015. Since then, Miyoomo is no longer it’s own stand-alone organization, rather multiple spin-

off organizations have been developed from its existence.
